The Comfort Zone is an Oxymoron

When the gallery owner  asked me to create an entertaining interview with the artist at their exhibition opening last week, my first thought was: “Sure, love to” My second thought? “Wait… do I know how to do this?”

The answer was no—not exactly. But I knew that wasn’t a reason to say no. My experience with storytelling, connection and public speaking felt adjacent enough. And I understand the art world. So, I jumped in.

I guess I could have taken refuge in my comfort zone. I mean it wasn’t exactly my expertise. But was it really safer to say no?

The truth is, the comfort zone is an oxymoron. It tricks us into thinking we’re secure but in a world that’s constantly moving, seeking comfort in the work place is the riskiest thing you can do.

Stepping up to that opportunity wasn’t about being fearless. It was about trusting my ability to grow in real time. Growth doesn’t wait for you to feel ready; it happens in motion, in moments where you stretch beyond what you know into what that that knowledge can access for you.In a shifting landscape—whether it’s work, creativity, or life—real safety comes from knowing you can adapt, not from staying where it’s comfy.
